Creating the Devastator
Part II
by J. W. Krych

It is hard to believe that the first Devastator prototype was built just about a year and a half ago, on June of 2001.

Reviewed by the June issue of Retrogaming Times, and even reviewed by my home newspaper, The Plain Dealer. Now that was neat!

Even so, we came out with an improved version of the 9908, using my Army National Guard contacts in the lumber business. That model, the Treyonics Home Controller System model 9908, was sent to California to be reviewed by Next Generation, Maximum PC, and PC Gamer. And, it eventually was sent back to me via Geek.com and Women Gamer.

The original Devastator has been a success, from the sheer happiness of each customer, to the quality of work that went in every unit sold. But, we wanted to improve!

From the interface, to the layout of the Devastator itself, to the very spinner, we wanted to improve our concept of the Home Controller System. And, we more than believe that we have!

While most of the parts used the new Devastator II are arcade components, and could not be radically improved, we really wanted to improve the spinner's performance. After doing a lot of research and development, we now have the Fultra-Trey Spinner. And in addition to the radical new design, we also use the Oscar Controls Model 3 encoder wheel. This new wheel is actually much easier to use than the original Happ encoder wheel. And, with much better resolution too!

Utilizing my brother Walter Krych's AutoCAD expertise once again, we re-designed the top panel of the Devastator. This new design, while using the same chassis, enables us to allow for either right-handed firing, or left-handed firing button layouts. Henceforth, the new designation of 9908RF and 9908LF for the new Treyonics Home Controller System-Devastator II.

And finally, we have made the process of connecting your Devastator II to your PC or MAC much easier. We use an all-in-one USB interface! This makes the design much more intuitive and also hot swappable. And most importantly, the new Devastator II is selling at a price of $395, $55 cheaper than the original!

No project is a single person endeavor, and the Devastator II is no exception. I would like to thank my brother Walter for his design expertise, Rob and Al at Carter-Jones Lumber, Jason Sawtelle for the great new logos, EMDKAY Marques, Oscar Controls, Andy Warne, Tom Zjaba, all the customers of Treyonics and your valuable feedback, and of course Lori; for not only loving retrogaming and the Devastator but to also being a helpmeet and more in the Devastator II. Production.
