SEGA GENESIS RETRO COLLECTION TO HIT PS2 and PSP

Sega will soon release arguably the greatest retro collection to date, entitled the Sega Genesis Collection for the PS2 and PSP. So if you want to relive what defined Sega as one of gaming's most revered publishers over 15 years ago on the Genesis be sure to pick it up!

The package will also contain detailed history about the titles, including such trivia as Sonic originally being cast as a rabbit before becoming the hedgehog that we all have come to love. In addition, the PSP version will allow, for the first time eve, wireless multiplayer for several of the games.

SONY PSP TO PLAY CLASSIC GENESIS & SNES EA TITLES

Coming November 7th, Electronic Arts will be releasing "EA Replay" for the Sony PSP platform for only $19.99. Replay will also include features not found in the original games, such as the ability to save any of these games at any point, local wireless head-to-head play on Budokan, Mutant League Football, and Road Rash II. Players will also be able to unlock and collect virtual trading cards featuring retro game art. The versions included in EA Replay will all be taken from the Super Nintendo or Genesis editions of the original titles.

Touch screen monitors will be placed at every station, and won't just be used for placing orders. Bushnell promises that over 70 casual and trivia-type video games will be available at each station. Not isolated from one another, the stations can be networked together, to allow a couple or group of people to play bingo, trivia, or any other game available.

So far $12 million has been invested into developing software for the project. Bushnell expects the first restaurant to open this fall in Los Angeles, with more obviously to follow, should the venture be a success.

To cut costs there are no plans to include waiters at Media Bistro. You order your food just the way you want it, and runners deliver it to you. Each 2-3 minute game will cost each participant a quarter, all but assuring the machines will have more money fed into them nightly than the average American coin-op machine.

The Hyatt Regency at the San Francisco Airport is the largest convention hotel in northern California, one of the few places able to accommodate the estimated 1,700 people who attended last year's expo. The Hyatt is located two miles from the San Francisco Airport and the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, and offers complimentary shuttles to both. The 20-minute trip to downtown San Francisco should also appeal to attendees making Classic Gaming Expo part of their family vacations.

In 2004, people from all over the world attended Classic Gaming Expo to see the latest offerings from exhibitors, visit the world's largest and most comprehensive video game museum, play classic and modern games and meet the luminaries of video gaming's past and present. Notable personalities such as Steve Wozniak, Nolan Bushnell, Ralph Baer, Al Alcorn, Jay Smith, David Crane and other celebrities have attended past shows and spoken to Classic Gaming Expo attendees.

David Pluchino, the Senior Research Manager at PMI states, "Whether playing on a computer, console, or handheld system, the majority of US households are gaming. Interestingly, more than a third of gamers are holding onto older systems and actively using them."

The survey also found that roughly 17% of those planning to buy a new system this holiday season will also purchase an older console.

ATARI ANTHOLOGY TO INCLUDE 85 CLASSIC GAMES

The upcoming Atari Anthology will be the largest classic game compilation to date, including a whopping 85 games. The collection will include 18 arcades games and 62 Atari 2600 games.

The "Atari Anthology" disc will also offer new challenge modes, such as "trippy mode," which renders the graphics in psychedelic colors, and "time warp" and "double speed," which can alter the pace of on-screen action.

ATARI PADDLE TV GAMES COMING THIS SUMMER

Jakks Pacific's will release another version in the series of Atari TV Games' units: the Atari Paddle TV Games. Similar to the Atari TV Games joystick released two years ago, the Atari Paddle TV Games will mimic the paddles released with the original Atari VCS system and include several paddle-based classic games built into the device. Gamers simply plug it directly into the televison to experience the old-school games. A one and two-player version will be released.

Games included: Breakout, Canyon Bomber, Casino, Circus Atari,Demons to Diamonds, Night Driver, Steeplechase, Street Racer, Super Breakout, Warlords, Warlords Arcade, Video Olympics, Arcade Pong and Pong.

Originally announced at 1999’s Classic Gaming Expo, the full-color magazine was created to address the burgeoning interest in the games, systems, and companies that shaped the industry. Consumer demand has grown since that time, with the NPD Group reporting a 94% sales increase for classic arcade compilations in 2003.

PLAY ATARI 2600 ON THE GAMEBOY ADVANCE!!

With retro-gaming as popular as ever, Aspyr Media, Inc. will be releasing the Activision Anthology for the GameBoy Advance in October or November. The title will contain a whopping 55 games including: Pitfall 1 & 2, Freeway, Keystone Kapers, Seaquest, River Raid 1 & 2, Spider Fighter and Fishing Derby.

Game Over centers on the Smashenburns, an ordinary suburban family who live in an alternate video-game universe inhabited by action heroes, monsters and cartoon characters.

The network has given a six-episode midseason order to the Carsey-Werner-Mandabach show, which features the voices of Marisa Tomei and Patrick Warburton. The voice cast also includes E.G. Daily and Rachel Dratch, who portray their teen kids, and Artie Lange as the family's 300-pound pet creature.

GDG PUBLISHES 14 NEW COLECOVISION GAMES

Master Colecovision Programmer Daniel Bienvenu and Good Deal Games Publishing Division is proud to announce a whopping fourteen new games for the Colecovision console! All games are original and being released in this collection for the very first time. Colecovision Game Pack #1 is packaged in a sturdy replica box complete with full-color labeled cartridge and a 16-page manual! Chief Executive Bruno Bonnell announced that the new ticker symbol would be 'ATAR', and the newly named Nasdaq shares soared up more than 26 percent at $6.50 at the close of trading after having climbed as high as $7.02.

The Atari name is the most storied in video gaming, dating back to the early 1970s when Nolan Bushnell and a team of engineers at Atari created "Pong," the arcade video game that was so popular that machines sometimes jammed because they were overflowing with quarters.

Over the years, Atari went through many incarnations. At one point it operated as a subsidiary of what was then called Warner Communications and is now part of AOL Time Warner. Then a stand-alone company in 1996, when it was acquired by JTS Corp. In early 1998 JTS sold the Atari rights and assets to toymaker Hasbro Inc. Infogrames, founded in France in 1983, acquired the rights to the Atari brand in early 2001 when it bought Hasbro Interactive. In October 2001 the company relaunched the brand and began using it as a games publishing label.

While a new version of Altered Beast was recently released for the Nintedno GameBoy Advance, Sega will also be displaying a playable new rendition of the classic coin-op Altered Beast for the Playstation 2 at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo..

The classic Genesis game Vectorman has also received a new update and will be on hand at the show, as well.

PLAYMORE BRINGS SNK NEO-GEO TO THE USA

Cult-favorite game brand SNK is being revived by Playmore, the Japanese company that purchased SNK's assets after the original company went out of business in 2001 at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo this year. Metal Slug and King of Fighters for Game Boy Advance will be their first two releases and will be displayed at E3.

Sega has revealed plans to turn their spiky-haired trademark character into a much stronger force with a new animated television show, a new line of Sonic toys, and -- of course -- many more great Sonic videogame titles.
Debuting in Japan this April, the new Sonic animated television series will also hit the U.S. and European airwaves later this fall. Although Sega has already produced a Sonic cartoon series here in the States, the company is planning to work more closely on the new Japanese production to bolster Sonic's new image both here and abroad.
Sega's toy unit is also following the latest Japanese trends as it ramps up production for an all-new line of Sonic collectables and action figures. And let's not forget about the videogames -- Sega plans to put out four brand-new Sonic titles in Japan alone and a whopping five here in the U.S. and in Europe, where the series has traditionally been much more popular.

Feb 7th, 2003 marks the true end of an era unlike any other...

What started out in a garage at 2965 Scott Blvd. Santa Clara Ca. will come to an end at 675 Sycamore in Milpitas today as Midway drops the axe and "Midway Games West" (Formerly Atari Games Corporation) lays off the remaining 30 employee's working there. Many will stay on for a few weeks tying up loose ends and shutting off the lights, but officially today is the day that the worlds Pioneering Video Game Company's legacy and existence comes to an end...

In the coming weeks the building will be cleared of people, furniture, equipment, hardware and paperwork. What was the birthplace of many laughs, smiles, challenges and thrills will slowly and quietly drift off into the nothingness that has been commonplace within the Valley for decades.

To be that last person... the one who will stand in the doorway, looking in and seeing the emptiness of it all, to listen to the quietness that itself will echo a myriad of electronic bleeps and beeps, synthesized theme music and trademark sound effects that many recognize in a heartbeat. The fading glow of screens no more, of flashes and pulses emitting onto the walls, ceiling and long gone faces of gamers and engineers alike... The door will lock and the final car will exit the parking lot, all that is left is a shell that stands alone, stands proud as its ghosts within play-on until the next tenant moves in...

“Yu Suzuki joins an impressive roster of game creators who have won this award for their leadership and innovation,” said Paul Provenzano, President of AIAS. “He has not only created some of the best video games in the world, but he has also helped enhance awareness and appreciation of this interactive art form.”

The standards for consideration of a Hall of Fame Award are very high. Criteria considered by the Academy Board include: pioneering a new genre or redefining an existing genre with a significant advance (i.e. changing the face of the art form); influencing other designers and products; demonstrating the highest level of creativity and innovation which results in ongoing cultural significance and influence; and consistent product success of a scale that expands the scope of the industry.

In addition to receiving the Hall of Fame Award, Mr. Suzuki will participate in a workshop at the 2003 D.I.C.E. Summit with fellow Hall of Fame winner, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto. “An Audience with the Masters” is a rare opportunity for attendees to pose questions directly to game design masters.

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) is located in Los Angeles, CA, and is theofficial professional academy of the $7+billion interactive entertainment software industry. AIAS is supported by the industry’s leading companies and counts among its board of directors representatives from Activision, Electronic Arts, Infogrames, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony to name a few.

TNN TO AIR THE VIDEO GAME AWARDS SHOW

The President of Film and Television at the TNN cable network, Albie Hecht, announced that he will be executive producing The Video Game Awards show sometime in the fourth quarter of 2003. The special will reward game developers, publishers, and creators for their efforts in the field across all platforms. For the first time in history give computer jockeys everywhere a legitimate reason to visit a tuxedo rental shop. Let's face it, you won't see 'Best Total Annihilation' at the Oscars!"

PLAY GAMEBOY GAMES ON THE GAMECUBE

Sure, you may be familiar with the new e-Reader for the that lets you play classic NES games on the GameBoy Advance, or perhaps the playable NES games built into Animal Crossing. But, did you know that in March Nintendo will release the Game Boy Player for the GameCube?

The device that hooks up to the GameCube to play all Game Boy titles on television, including the old black and white Game Boy titles, Game Boy Color Titles, and Game Boy Advance games.

Extra features include selectable borders that surround the game screen, parental and timing controls, button customization and more.

You may use the GameCube controller to play the games, and both the D-pad and the control stick will function in all games. If you have a GameBoy Advance (which isn't required) you can link up and use the handheld as the controller or to play multi-player games with only one cartridge!

OlderGames and StormWorld Games announced today that a new adventure game is now under development for a 2003 scheduled release.

The game based upon a hotel cursed with a voodo past and revolving around a paranormal storyline is slated for release in late summer 2003 by StormWorld Games.

"We believe that this game will set a new standard for other
adventure titles after it that raises the bar in creativity and
puts a very origional twist on the way adventure games are
played from a user standpoint" said R.W. Bivins creative mind behind OlderGames and CEO of StormWorld Games.

Not much is known about the title at this point other than
the vague summary of the plot above. This game is being
heavily guarded, and neither StormWorld, or it's parent
company OlderGames will comment further on the title.

A PC demo has been promised by October 31st of this year and the target platforms for the title are: TurboGrafix CD, Jaguar CD, and the PC CD-ROM.

SCI-FI CHANNEL TO AIR MYST TELEVISION SHOW

The SCI FI Channel announced that it is developing a four-hour miniseries inspired by the best-selling video game Myst. The show will be a pilot for a possible series. The Myst television show will uncovers an ancient civilization that existed for thousands of years beneath the surface of the Earth--a civilization that created magical books allowing one to travel to other worlds. Myst will be a Mandalay Television Pictures production for SCI FI, and executive produced by Elizabeth Stephen with Rand Miller and Susan Bonds of Cyan, in association with Columbia Tri Star Domestic Television.

4th ANNUAL CLASSIC GAME TOURNY ANNOUNCED

The 4th Annual Funspot/Twin Galaxies Classic Game Tournament will be held May 30 through June 2, 2002 at Funspot. With over 500 games, it is the second largest arcade in the world and is located in Weirs Beach, New Hampshire. The 60,000 square foot complex also contains 20 bowling lanes, a miniature golf course, a driving range, a 400-seat Bingo hall, a restaurant, the D.A. Long Tavern, and a state of the art indoor golf center featuring six Full-Swing Golf Simulators.

PHILLYCLASSIC DETAILS

The organizers of PhillyClassic, The East Coast Classic Gamer's Event, have announced the dates of the 2001 show to take place at the Sheraton Suites Philadelphia Airport on Friday, April 20 & Saturday April 21, 2001.

Admission is $6 in advance, $7.50 at the door, and will allow attendees to play all day, enter tournaments, participate in a classic gaming auction, and meet fellow gamers, vendors, and videogame celebrities. Prizes will be awarded to the tournament winners, and there will be random drawings for door prizes awarded throughout the day.

ATARI VCS PORTABLE TO BE SOLD

Ben Heckendorn, the creator of the original portable Atari 2600 console, has created a new version of the handheld that can conceivably be mass-produced. He plans to auction off the prototype and use the event as a way to gauge interest. If enough people are willing to buy the portable, he will produce more of the handhelds and begin selling them! GAMEBOY COLOR SEWING MACHINE ANNOUNCED

Okay, so this isn't truly classic game related, but chalk it up as, "Videogame News of the Wierd"
-- In an effort to bridge the gap between Grandmothers & Grandsons everywhere, Japan's largest sewing machine company (Jaguar International) will integrate industrial cardigan stitchers and 8-bit videogame Gameboy technology. The device, named Nuotto, will connect via the game link cable. Users simply press a button, and the system will automatically instruct the sewing machine on how to stencil and stitch graphics (Pokémon characters, anyone) onto your favorite clothes and fabrics. "Only in Japan," you say? Well, guess again! Jaguar international has American ties, and IS planning to release the device stateside later this year, and will retail for under $600.

NEW RESEARCH REVEALS GAME PLAYER STATISTICS

According to research conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates, 60% of the U. S. population above the age of 6 years old uses interactive entertainment regularly. That totals approximately 145 million Americans. This also reveals an increase of female players, consisting of 43%, or just over 62 million. The study concludes that the majority of game players (61%) are over the age of 18, and the average gamer being 28 years of age.

14-STORY-TALL GAME OF TETRIS

The students at Brown University play the world's largest fully-functional Tetris game! Transforming their 14-story Sciences Library into a giant video display, the game runs on Linux computer, which is then hooked up to a set of 10,000 light bulbs that bring the game to life using the installed lights in 100 windows of the library.

OTHELLO FOR THE ATARI LYNX TO BE RELEASED

Harry Dodgson, a long-time Lynx hobbyist, will be releasing Othello for the Atari Lynx this February. This version of the classic board game includes various play modes -- single player, head-to-head, and more, clear audio, and engaging graphics.

WARREN ROBINETT - THE MAKING OF ADVENTURE!

Warren Robinett, programmer of Adventure for the Atari 2600, wrote a manuscript many years ago. This manuscript, titled Imaginary Worlds: The Design of Adventure and Rocky's Boots, discusses the creation of his famed Atari 2600 hit, Adventure, as well as Rocky's Boots for the Apple computers. VIDEO GAME POSTAGE STAMP RELEASED!

The United States Postal Service, has released its Video Game postage stamp, included in the Stamps of the Century series. It appears within the '80's collection.

BEYOND GAMES GRANTS LYNX PROPERTIES TO SONGBIRD

Songbird Productions has acquired all rights and source code for three unreleased Lynx titles from former Jaguar and Lynx developer Beyond Games. Carl Forhan will complete the programming, and plans to release Cybervirus first.

Cybervirus: Battle Virus infected robots and rogue computers in this first-person, mission-based action game based on the Lynx BattleWheels engine.

Mechtiles: Giant robot combat multiplayer game, also based on the BattleWheels engine.

Ultra Vortex: Two-player fighting game. Originally started on the Lynx, and released on the Jaguar asUltra Vortek.

NEW ATARI 2600 GAMES DISCOVERED!

PLAYSTATION INTELLIVISION CLASSICS RELEASED

Activision releases over 30 emulated Intellivision games, complete with a video history section including interviews with some of the original Intellivision game programmers and designers.

PAC-MAN RECORD

New Hampshire -- In the entire world, Billy Mitchell, a 34 year old hot sauce manufacturer, is the first and only player to achieve a perfect score in Pac-Man. With an estimated 10 billion games, for a period of over 20 years, a perfect game of Pac-Man has never been achieved. More difficult than a MLB pitcher pitching a hit free game, and higher odds than bowling a perfect game. Mitchell has achieved the highest of status amongst his peers. Mitchell's first attempt ended rather ungloriously, after a careless child accidently unplugged a complete row of games. To obtain the perfect score of 3,333,360 points, Mitchell cleared all 256 levels eating every dot, power pill, blue ghost, and fruit with a single Pac-Man. Clearing Pac-Man is a monotonous task. The first 20 screens have limited differences, and boards 21 to 255 are identical.

During the final screen, the monitor become covered with random numbers and letters, making visibility and navigation difficult. On July 3rd, approximately 5 p.m. EST, a simple "Game Over" softly glowed on the screen. Mitchell also owns the standing record on Donkey Kong, and has played a single continious game of Centipede for 47 hours.
